What is an addon domain?
Print- domain names, cPanel
- 1
“Addon domain” is an older cPanel term for an additional domain hosted in the same cPanel account as the primary domain. Current cPanel versions manage domains through the Domains interface. A domain can use its own document root for a separate website, or share the primary domain's document root when both names should show the same site.
What an additional domain shares
Adding a domain to one cPanel account does not create a separate hosting account or separate cPanel login. Domains in the account use the plan's shared resources and account-level access. If each customer needs an independent login and separate account limits, review reseller hosting instead.
Separate website or same website?
- Separate document root: place different site files in a different folder for the additional domain.
- Shared document root: both domains display the same site files. Choose this only when that is your intention.
- Alias or redirect: use an alias for another name that reaches the same website, or a redirect when visitors should end up at one preferred URL.
Before adding the domain
Confirm that the domain is registered, your hosting plan allows the domain setup you need, and its DNS points to the hosting account. Choose the correct document root and avoid selecting a folder that already contains a different website. Labels and options can vary by cPanel version and provider.
