Search engines discover pages by following links and processing XML sitemaps. Submitting a URL does not guarantee that it will be crawled, indexed, or shown for a particular search.
Set up Google Search Console
- Open Google Search Console and verify ownership of your website.
- Submit your sitemap in the Sitemaps report. Use the sitemap URL shown on your site and check the report for fetch errors.
- For a small number of important new or updated pages, use URL Inspection to check Google's reported status and request indexing when available. Avoid repeatedly submitting the same URL.
Check that a page can be indexed
- The page loads publicly and returns a successful response, rather than a login page or error.
- Robots rules do not block crawling, and the page does not contain a
noindexdirective. - The canonical URL points to the preferred version of the page.
- The page contains useful, original information and can be reached through relevant links from other pages on your site.
Write useful page titles and descriptions
Give each important page a concise, descriptive title and a visible heading that accurately describe its content. A meta description can help summarize a page for searchers, but search engines may choose a different snippet. Google does not use the meta-keywords tag for ranking.
Organic search visibility takes time and depends on many factors. Search Console reports help diagnose discovery and indexing; they do not guarantee rankings. Paid search advertising is a separate channel from organic results.
