What is the difference between parked, addon, and subdomains?

Older cPanel guides use the terms “parked domain” and “addon domain.” Current cPanel interfaces generally use Domains and distinguish domains by how they are configured:
- Alias (formerly parked domain): a second domain name that displays the same website as another domain. It commonly uses the same document root.
- Additional domain (formerly addon domain): another registered domain added to the same cPanel account. It can have its own document root and site; available options depend on the server.
- Subdomain: a name beneath a domain you control, such as
blog.example.com. It is not a separate registered domain, and its website location depends on the account's configuration.
These configurations are managed within a cPanel account and share its access and resource limits. A separate cPanel login requires a separate hosting account or another service that provides its own account.
Before adding any domain, confirm that your plan supports it and that its DNS points to the correct hosting provider. In cPanel, review the domain's document root so it serves the intended files.
